First Trimester (Weeks 1-12)

What to Expect

The first trimester is a time of rapid development for your baby. During these early weeks, your baby's major organs and body systems begin to form.

  • Baby's heart begins to beat (around week 6)
  • Brain and spinal cord develop
  • Arms and legs start to form
  • Facial features begin to develop
  • Baby is about 2-3 inches long by week 12

Second Trimester (Weeks 13-27)

  • Fingerprints and footprints form

Third Trimester (Weeks 28-40)

What to Expect

The final stretch! Your baby is growing rapidly and preparing for life outside the womb.

  • Baby settles into birth position (usually head down)
  • Baby is about 18-20 inches long at full term

Common Symptoms

  • Shortness of breath
  • Frequent urination
  • Swelling in feet and ankles
  • Sleep difficulties
  • Braxton Hicks contractions increase
  • Back pain and pelvic pressure

Important Appointments

  • Check-ups every 2 weeks (weeks 28-36)
  • Weekly check-ups (weeks 36-40)
  • Group B strep test (around week 36)
  • Finalize birth plan
  • Discuss labor signs and when to call provider

Self-Care Tips

  • Stay hydrated - aim for 8-10 glasses of water daily
  • Get plenty of rest - your body is working hard
  • Eat a balanced diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables
  • Take prenatal vitamins as recommended
  • Exercise regularly (with your provider's approval)
  • Practice stress-reduction techniques like meditation or yoga
  • Attend all scheduled prenatal appointments
  • Don't hesitate to call your provider with questions or concerns

When to Call Your Provider Immediately

  • Severe abdominal pain or cramping
  • Vaginal bleeding
  • Severe headaches or vision changes
  • Significant decrease in baby's movements
  • Fever over 100.4°F
  • Severe vomiting or inability to keep fluids down
  • Signs of preterm labor (before 37 weeks)
  • Any concerns that feel urgent to you
